Driveway Fill-In

There are several driveway repair situations where filling in the cracks can be a viable solution. For instance, when small surface cracks (known as Crazing) happen (and there are no other signs of other driveway damage), the concrete can be smoothed out with a concrete resurfacing product. This is a cosmetic fix for driveway cracks small enough as to not indicate structural damage. It will keep these unsightly cracks from getting worse when collected water accumulates in them, freeze, expand and cause a larger problem.

Wide, jagged cracks that were caused because of settling may require a full driveway replacement. These cracks would be wider than an inch and are uneven.

You may not have any problems with your driveway, but have joints that join different sections of pavement together. Separated control joints can be filled in to give the appearance of a new continuous driveway.

Driveway Materials

Three of the most common driveway materials are concrete, asphalt and gravel. The function, appearance and price will help you determine what driveway material is best for you. Generally, the cost to replace a concrete driveway is higher than asphalt and gravel is the least expensive.

Concrete

Concrete is durable and can last for over 40 years. Usually concrete is gray, but you can have it finished with color and there are many colors and textures to choose from.

You will have to wait for concrete to cure for 7 days before parking your car on it and will have to wait 30 days for heavier vehicles.

To maintain concrete pressure wash as needed. You can scrub oil stains with a brush and commercial degreaser. It is recommended to seal concrete every 3-5 years and more frequently if exposed to sodium chloride or magnesium chloride deicers.

Repairs on concrete driveways are more difficult and will crack in freezing temperatures.

Asphalt

Asphalt is less expensive than concrete and comes in any color as long as it is black. It is possible, however to imprint it with patterns and UV-stable colors. Asphalt will last for around 20 years with adequate maintenance.

The flexibility of asphalt makes this material resistant to damage caused by freezing temperatures. It can also withstand damage from salt and chemical deicers. Because asphalt is black, it will absorb the suns heat which will help ice and snow to melt off faster. The cost to resurface asphalt driveways will be less than concrete.

With asphalt you only have to wait one day before using your new driveway.

You can hose down or pressure wash your asphalt driveway and it should be sealed every 2-3 years.

Gravel

Gray gravel is the least expensive and most durable driveway material. Normally you think of gray when think of a gravel driveway, but gravel can come in colorful varieties of crush stone such as granite or marble.

Freezing temperatures will not affect your gravel driveway but snow removal can be difficult. Gravel driveway repair is easier, however.

You are free to use your gravel driveway right after installation.

To maintain a gravel driveway you must remove weeds, may want to add a binder product to control dust, and will need to add another top layer every 1-5 years.
